Launch your aviation career
Okay, you got your commercial. What’s next?
Let’s start with some guidelines I think are crucial for a successful job search in the aviation industry.
But wait, who even am I to give advice on something I’m JUST getting started at?
Hi, I’m Ivan, a 2000s’ kid with a fresh commercial license tip-toeing into his professional life.
So, to make sure we’re clear, this is by no means career advice. I’m a low time guy too: I know veeery little about “what’s next”.
This is me sharing what I’ve been taught and/or learned so far.
I hope it helps!
1. Aviation is a small world
Chances are you’ve heard that phrase before. If you haven’t, it basically means that a pilot should always expect to let his reputation precede himself.
Have a positive attitude, a good pilot is always learning.
Be polite and courteous to everyone you meet, goodwill goes a long way.
Don’t suck. We’re pilots, we will be judged by our flying skills.
For what it’s worth, I don’t think you should need a reason to keep becoming a better aviator. Always wanting to improve should go without saying. Even now as a low time guy or gal, build yourself a good name in this industry. Your future self will thank you.
2. Your network is your net worth
That’s true for any industry. It might even be more important in aviation. The number and quality of the connections you make is tied to how many doors will open for you. A low time guy flying right-seat in a jet is uncommon but it happens. That’s the power of networking, with a tiny bit of luck.
You can be creative about it. One of the go-to ways is to hang out at an airport and just, talk with people. If there’s a particular position you’re interested in, dress to the occasion and go hand-deliver your resume. Maybe have lunch with someone you’d like to work with and ask them about their career.
There are lots of methods to build up your network. The most efficient is to do it in person, but Facebook and LinkedIn work almost just as well. They’re also more scalable.
3. Volume negates luck
Here at The Road to 1500 🛫 we will help you find jobs that you’re qualified for. We’re just removing a part of the equation and can’t guarantee you’ll land the role. Do you want the framework you must follow to succeed?
apply, follow up, keep applying.
We all know the competition for low time jobs is tough. Don’t expect this community newsletter to give you magic unicorn leads. The leads will be good, very good, but everything we find can be found by anyone who’s looking hard enough. In a market where the offer (low time pilots) is higher than the demand (low time jobs), you gotta do your part.
So as we wrap up, quick math: the more places you apply to, the higher your chances are at landing that first gig. Put in the work.
These 3 points may not seem revolutionary, but they will lay the foundations of your career. We’re honored to contribute.
